Smit en de Storm (Smit and the Storm)

Escape the flood before history repeats itself.

"Smit en de Storm" (Smit and the Storm) is an educational escape room based on the devastating Watersnoodramp (the North Sea flood of 1953). Using real survivor stories, we created an immersive experience that teaches what happened during the disaster and how to respond in such situations. Our prototype features a scale model of the escape room and interactive puzzles. Players follow Smit's story while experiencing the tension and choices faced during the flood. Will you escape before the waters rise? Learn from history, because it could happen again.

Game through culture

"Smit en de Storm" is rooted in the 1953 Watersnoodramp and its archival legacy. We divided archive images among our team, each selecting resonant pieces before discussing collectively. Images of the harbor and people evacuating their belongings spoke to us most, capturing both chaos and humanity. Combined with real survivor testimonies, these became our narrative foundation. We transform cultural memory into lived experience: players don't just learn about the disaster, they step into it, making the same urgent decisions faced by survivors.
